Geohot has been boasting for a while that he's figured it out. This is the same guy that originally figured out how to unlock the iPhone. Whilst bragging that he had hacked it, he hadn't released the actual hack. Yesterday he did. http://geohotps3.blogspot.com/2010/01/h ... atter.htmlIs anyone going to try it?

I noticed this the other day and was waiting for release so they can figure out what can be done. Will certainly be watching it with interest.

Such a load of rubbish, sick of not having PSN access. No light at the end of the tunnel is visible.
Tempting to throw my orig 60GB in a cupboard and buy a light version for PSN but sadly don't have cash to throw around like that. I wonder if non updated PS3's will be worth something one day.
Pain. in. the. ARSE.

The so called PS3 exploit. Basically, geohot released the first steps of how to access the PS3 system areas. This in turn had sony remove the OtherOS feature that allowed linux to be installed, as it was a requirement to take advantage of this. So if you update above version3.15 then you loose other OS. if you do not, you cannot access the PSN online or any of it's features. Geohot advised that a custom firmware would be released to allow updating and retain the OtherOS feature, to hold off on updating. This was BS. He is not releasing anything himself. Instead stating that someone else should take what he had released and turn it into something for the community. Bit of a cop out, when it gets too hot he bails... I agree he has no obligation to do anything but i think he should have kept his discoveries low key to allow those who he would ask finish what he started the opertunity to do something with it before sony forced this update and remove the feature. Also this means you loose however much hard disk space you allocated to OtherOS, unless you do a full backup and format of your system. (pain in the ass).

What can you do in an other OS that you can't do in XMB? Well, I mean to function as a media centre?

... what he said. Basically OtherOS allowed the install of linux on a separate partition. So you could basically do anything alinux box could, except run games that require GPU access. The cell processor is superior for may things. Alot of people use PS3 farms to do mass rendering or major number crunching... many many reasons for it. EDIT: and the inbuilt browser on PS3 is HORRIBLE On the topic of PS3 as a media center, it's shit because it relies on a media server rather than being able to browse shares, cannot support NTFS, even if it could it would not play divx off external media.

A PS3 isnt a PC so what did you expect when you're trying to turn it into one? If you bought a PS3 and expected not not get punched in the nuts by somewhere along the line then maybe you shouldnt have bought a Sony product. I have a HTPC so I use my PS3 for games, DVD's and blurays. I don't understand when you say : UbastarS wrote:On the topic of PS3 as a media center, it's shit because it relies on a media server rather than being able to browse shares, cannot support NTFS, even if it could it would not play divx off external media.
Do you mean the software or the hardware? Seems as though the PS3 is quite addequete out of the box at being a media centre. You specific needs aside. Cloudstrike wrote:CommanderEl wrote:What can you do in an other OS that you can't do in XMB? Well, I mean to function as a media centre?

No I don't, that's why I asked. Idiot. UbastarS wrote:This was BS. He is not releasing anything himself. Instead stating that someone else should take what he had released and turn it into something for the community.
He's under no obligation to do anything for the community, its attitues like yours which has turned him away from wanting to help the community. He's sick of people bitching and moaning (what did he expect anyway?) and doesn't care for the betterment of tech, more personal satisfaction.

No need to get on your high horse matey.
I did not say anything about him being obliged to do anything. Simply stated that he could have avoided doing more harm than good if he had kept it low key. Instead he goes about it as publicly as you can do without hiring a billboard.
Only gripe I have is if he did promise a fix and did not intend to deliver.
AND I DON'T MEAN A HACK. I just mean a fix to update the firmware without loosing OtherOS.
Good on him for what he did, certainly not how he did it. In the end I blame sony more than anyone. He should never have told anyone to hold off on updating the system and wait for a custom firmware that he had no intention on working on, if that be the case.

I don't understand, you defend Sony, then belittle them? Just my 2c on that one. Anyone hear about the class-action lawsuit some guy is bringing against Sony? Pretty much since they advertised that you could install the OtherOS on it and use that, then took that or PSN functionality away, consumers have been left with the choice of dropping features, and thus they are no longer getting functionality that was advertised. The(/an) exploit would have been found eventually, and either way Sony would have done this. They should have planned and designed better, and blaming Geohot is unfair. Sony is in the wrong here.

I don't believe I did this, merely the way you intperpreted what I said Dislexsick wrote:Anyone hear about the class-action lawsuit some guy is bringing against Sony? Isn't this like internode cutting back their newsgroup access or McDonalds having a burger for a limited time? I agree blaming Geohot is unfair but blaming Sony is equally unfair. Read your T & C's and realise that Sony has every legal right to do what they did. I'm very interested to see the outcome of the legal proceedings.

They did not have to remove the feature to secure the system... at least not in the long run.
They could have removed it temporarily with the intent of re-introduction when secure.
I would compare it to giving you a toy with your happy meal then demanding it back or you dont get the burger. either way you loose something.

You're correct, I skimmed over it again and I don't see you defending sony. CommanderEl wrote:Dislexsick wrote:Anyone hear about the class-action lawsuit some guy is bringing against Sony? See UbarstarS analogy, it is much more fitting. In this case Maccas burger = PS3s selling with a different SKU (i.e. free game) for a limited time, or something. [/quote] The T&Cs would only apply to PSN access, and it's not viable to read them before purchase. The case revolves around the fact they advertised BOTH features for their product but later removed one.

They don't remove it. They remove your PSN access unless you submit to a forced update. The update is what removes the feature, thus it is an imposed ultimatum. You probably knew that tho...

Yeah, I knew. My maccas analogy is flawed, but I was in a rush. offering you a free game, but after sale saying you can't play it unless you disable PSN is more suitable.

I think the thread has degraded and gone a little OT.
Back on track... It's a sad situation. Nothing good has come of it with the exception of the fact there was/is a hole in the security, big deal if it goes to waste.
Still at a tough choice to update or not. I don't really care about otherOS, more for home brew. I just hate to think once I update there may be no going back
