Any thoughts as to the times? We'll open as early as we can, but the usual finish?
with the right tools I can do anything with the wrong tools ... you'll need to give me a minute plus I need a new right shoulder and upper spine!

Is this due to the internet activation of games making it harder to LAN or is it to do with the venue? Real shame, with try to get along.

Neither really.. tho the game situation did make a dent to the numbers
The main reason is the core committee/admins still left are getting older.. and we haven't been able to get younger blood willing to come in and train up to take over roles as people leave.. not for a few years now.
It's at the point now where it's too much work and nolonger "fun" for the remaining guys.. so we took the decision to do one final event, try to make it a good send off.. rather than slowly get smaller and smaller till the lan just dissapears and nobody notices

When valhalla started it was a uni club, when i joined in 2003 there was no less than 29 admins. In 2011, there is not a man on the committee who isnt employed full time - or would be if he wasnt seriously incapacitated. In addition there are now only 8 regular admins. Over the last 15 years, a lot of the Valhalla community have moved on, whether its marriage, family, decent employment and the responsibilities that come with getting older. For many of us, coming to Valhalla and setting up and packing up and running the event all day is effectively like another day at work - without pay.
In addition, game development has stagnated for LANs. We are still for the most part having to play games that are years old because competitively there is no alternative, and you can only do so much with adsl2 connections. Looking at upcoming game and particularly the console emphasis of this, we believe that the situation worsens. Other LANs are better placed to deal with this due to size and lack of competitive gaming.
For mine, 16 years is a very good run for a volunteer based LAN Party, Ive been involved for 8, and running LANs for 7. There are other groups out there who can cater to your LAN needs, all over the city. There are some quality net cafes and even a gaming bar now that can help satiate even the hardest of hardcore gamers.
